Application Case: Intelligent Road Weather Monitoring in Qingdao, China

As urbanization accelerates, expressways within city clusters are playing an increasingly important role in regional connectivity, industrial integration, and the efficient flow of people and goods. With this comes a growing demand for smarter infrastructure, particularly in weather-sensitive domains like road traffic.

Highways are highly vulnerable to various adverse weather conditions. Events such as light rain, snow accumulation, road surface icing, heavy fog, sandstorms, and extreme rainfall can severely impact driving safety. In some cases, visibility may drop sharply or pavement conditions may deteriorate, increasing the risk of traffic accidents and infrastructure damage.

To ensure safe and efficient road operations, it is essential to establish a comprehensive road weather monitoring service platform that can provide real-time warnings, environmental data, and decision support tailored to the needs of modern transportation systems.

Solution: Automatic Road Weather Station (FRT HW01A Series)

In Qingdao, China, the local Meteorological Bureau and Jiangsu Institute of Wireless Meteorological Science jointly explored how to enhance expressway traffic weather monitoring. Through collaboration on deployment, system maintenance, and data application, they defined key action items for advancing intelligent road weather services.

This intelligent sensing system integrates:

  • Visibility measurement

  • Air temperature & humidity

  • Atmospheric pressure

  • Wind speed & direction

  • Precipitation, solar radiation, UV index

  • Road surface temperature, water film, ice, and snow detection

Key Features & Advantages

  • Non-intrusive road surface sensors: remote detection without damaging pavement

  • All-weather, 24/7 operation

  • Real-time data transmission and display

  • Seamless integration with smart traffic management systems

  • Modular design for easy installation and maintenance

Project Impact – Safer Roads, Smarter Cities

This deployment significantly enhances the city’s ability to anticipate and respond to hazardous weather conditions such as heavy fog, icing, or low visibility. It enables authorities to issue timely alerts, coordinate traffic flow, and deploy resources effectively—minimizing accidents and maximizing efficiency.
